A) Centre for Historical and Archaeological
Studies (CHAS)
The
Centre organized a training camp for the development
of rural employment and handicraft in April-May
2003. The training camp, which lasted for forty
days, was organized in the Puthu-kkad village
in Karuma-lloor Grama Panchayath. A survey conducted
by the students of the Advanced Diploma in Archaeology
and Museology brought to light the traditional
community of Pottersat Chettikad parambil Potteries
in Puthukkad village. The potters were following
only the traditional art of making pots and
flower vases of different sizes. As this was
manu-factured by all potters, the competition
was high and their living was hard wth the rthe
result that only 20 families out of the traditional
90 families were continuing the work.
An
intensive coaching was given to the potters
to uplift them and preserve the traditional
handicrafts. Potters were taught to design and
manufacture innovative modern articles using
the old technique. They were also taught to
design and make artistic decorative pillars,
wall hangs, terracotta toys, figurines, models
etc. After forty days of training and production
an exhibition of the products was conducted
in the village.
The
artists who trained the potters, Mr.Ramachandran
P.V and Mr.Sudhakaran K.V were the resource
persons hired by the College.

One
of the tasks taken up by the CHPCD has been
the building up of international linkages. The
Center has arranged visits by scholars from
abroad, and the Young Adult Volunteer Program
in which a volunteer from the U S comes and
stays on the campus participating in the campus
life and doing specific assigned tasks. The
program has continued for four years.
CHPCD
has also initiated the partnership of the college
with the Asociation of Presbyterian Colleges
and Universities in the United States (APCU).Under
this partnership, batches of students from Austin
College ,Texas ,spend two to three weeks on
the campus to complete a credit-carrying course
specially designed for them. This has been going
on since 2000. The Principals are ( a ) Richard
wood and ( b ) Dr. Kano Yama Moto.

two UGC major projects in this area. Ms. Alexandra
