COLLECTION
The
Library’s pivotal role is to support and contribute
to the achievement of quality teaching, learning and
research at the college. It’s orientation of collection
and collection policies change as the academic environment
of the college changes. This library offers, in addition
to the more than 72,000 documents in print format, more
than 200 documents in non-print format which covers
a wide range of subjects. The library, keeping in line
with the mission and collection development policy,
tries to acquire latest material in all subjects related
to the curriculum. Though the college community utilizes
the collection optimally for their academic, enrichment
and entertainment purposes, we promote the use of theology
literature preserved separately in the library by outside
community.
At
present the library subscribes to 48 journals including
5 international journals. As an initiative, we have
started subscription to 13 online journals also. The
bound volumes of journals are kept as part of the main
collection, and available for reference. Though the
information literacy programs offered to the students
instigated usage of the journal literature, we feel
that it has to be improved more.
The
selection of documents to be procured for the library
is a joint effort of the academic faculty, students
and librarian. However, the teaching departments contribute
a lot in this process of developing a vibrant and valuable
collection. We respect the privilege of each and every
user of the college library to suggest procurement of
required material. Regular interactions with students
and faculty, both about the collection needs and the
possibilities of a good collection either at service
desks or at orientation sessions give rise to amendments
in the policies of the library.
Library
promotes cooperative collection development and resources
sharing agreements that are mutually beneficial on local
and regional level. Even if there are no formal agreements
with another institution, we encourage consultation
of resources maintained in our library by users of that
institution. Right now, the U. C. College has an institutional
membership in British Library at Trivandrum, and is
in the process of formalizing a consortium of colleges
in Kerala.
GIFT
The
library welcomes gifts of books, manuscripts, archival
records, documents related to the academic disciplines
and those documents related to the college or local
history. The library retains the right to accept or
reject gifts-in-kind. Once received, such materials
will be the asset of the college and will be made available
for use subject to the rules and regulations of the
library.
