The Department of Economics is one of the departments with which the college started functioning in 1921. Prof. V.M. Itteyerah, one of the founders of the college, was the founding Head of the Department. All members of the teaching faculty have research degrees (M.Phil, Ph.D).

Teaching methods using Power Point Presentation and the Net based techniques are followed to support and augment conventional methods. Open house programs, tutorials and remedial classes are organized on a regular basis. Subject Associations (UG&PG) conduct regular programs and publishes BusiNews a monthly journal of the department.

Department Activities

Two members of the department are research guides in the M.G. University. One member has undertaken a research project in association with the Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum.


Research


The Department produced three Ph.D’s under the guidance of Dr. C. A. Antony.One of our students was selected to the ‘Indian Administrative Service’ (2003). Our students were placed at the Second and Third rank at the University level for the PG program during 2002 & 2004.We plan to develop the department into Center for Research/Current Discourses on Environmental Economics/ Local Finance in the coming years.


Facilities
Library

Resources of the library include 5000 volumes on economics and 18 journals.The department received financial support from World Bank (Capacity building program in Environmental Economics) for the library.
