The Department was established in 1926 and the B.Sc.Physics (main) course was started in 1939. The first Post Graduate course in Science sanctioned by UGC to a private College in Kerala was for M.Sc. Physics in this Department in 1958. The Ernakulam center of the Physics Department of the Kerala University started functioning in this Department in 1963 and it is this center which later developed into the Physics Department of Cochin University of Science And Technology. The Department took the initiative in starting a Computer center in the College in 1987.

Prof.N.Geetha Kumari

The Department Organised a meeting of its staff, former staff and old students at 2.00 p.m. on sunday, 30th March 2008 in the TB Ninan Hall to bid farewell to Prof. N.Geethakumari, Head of the Department, who retired from active service of the college on 31.05 2008.

The Department Celebrates the Golden Jubilee of the MSc Programme during January - December 2008. As part of the celebrations the Department organised an exhibition - Spectrum 2008 - in Physics, Electronics & Computer Science for High School and Plus two Students during 10th - 12th January 2008. The Exhibition was inaugurated by Prof. K.Govindankutty Menon, former Professor and Head of the Department. About 1000 students from various schools in and around Aluva visited the Exhibition.

Profile
The teachers give importance for introducing the subject from the very basics to its full depth with a view to creating interest for the students in the topic and making them appreciate the beauty of the subject. The teachers collect feedback from students and improve their mode of teaching. They conduct special classes outside the regular working hours and regular working days to compensate for the hours lost due to various reasons and are not ready for any compromise on this.

Apart from conventional classroom lectures, the learning is made more student participatory particularly in M.Sc. level. The main theory part is dealt in detail by the teacher and applications, qualitative details, problems etc. are given either as assignments or for seminar presentation by the students. The OHP and power point presentation facility are available to the students and teachers.

The Department arranges Open House Program for all the B.Sc. Classes after the First Internal evaluation test in September, where parents, teachers and students come together and review the performance of the students and discuss what each can do so that the student utilizes his/her talents in the best way. The Dept. makes it sure that all parents come and meet the teachers with their wards. Such programmes definitely help to improve the performance of the students and is very useful to make them more dutiful and diligent.

Besides academic activities, the teachers of the Department are/were bearing responsibilities related to administrative/extracurricular activities such as Bursar of the College, member, Governing Board ; Secretary, Inter Church Fellowship; Warden, Women's Hostel; Company Commander-NCC Girls wing of the College; Staff Advisor, College Union Arts Club; member, Staff Recreation Club; Lecturer in charge of Guidance Bureau; member , IQAC; Coordinator of remedial programmes; Coordinator of Value Education classes; Secretary, Staff Council; Coordinator, IMF; Convener, Grievance Redressal Cell; member, Central Purchase Committee; Secretary, Staff Welfare fund ; Secretary, Department Council; member, website designing committee of the College.

Now the thrust of the Department is

  • to develop it into a center of excellence for UG and PG studies in Physics and
  • to develop it as a  Research Centre.

The Dept. plans to establish necessary facilities for research in Preparationand Characterization of Thin Films.

FACILITIES

Library Facility
The Dept has a library, named after late Prof. T.B. Thomas, the chief mentor of the Department. Some of the bookshelves are donated by Mrs.T.B.Thomas. The books for the newly started B.Sc. Courses and those purchased in 1970's under the COSIP Programme are kept in this Library whereas the books purchased using UGC assistance are kept in the Central Library. The Dept. Library possesses a good collection of back volumes of journals, periodicals in Physics and Electronics and also books donated by retired staff and old students. The students use this Library with the help of the respective class teachers since there is no Librarian. There are a total of about 9000 books of the subject in the two libraries.
